The most important thing my mom taught me about relationships:
You need the ability to listen.
My mom never says “I love you.” Neither does my dad, really. While I cannot confirm I experience everything written in the articles about first and second generation Asian American families, I can honestly say I don’t remember the last time I heard those three words from my parents’ mouths.
Just now my mom called me and asked if I brought a jacket because it got chilly out. The phone call was literally 15 seconds long. She sort of yelled at me after I answered “No, I didn’t bring a jacket”, but this is what I heard:
"I love you."
I was listening.
